Tributes are pouring in for EastEnders and On the Buses actor Anna Karen, 85, who has died in a house fire.

An official statement from the London Fire Brigade reads: "Sadly, a woman has died following a house fire on Windsor Road in Ilford.

"Part of the ground floor of a mid-terrace house was damaged by fire.

"Sadly, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The Brigade was called at 22:40 and the fire was under control by 23:38.

"Three fire engines and around 20 firefighters from Ilford and Barking fire stations attended the incident.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."

The Official Twitter page for the BBC Soap EastEnders expressed sadness at Karen's death, with co-stars also posting tributes.

Karen was known for playing Aunt Sal on EastEnders and Olive on the ITV sitcom On the Buses.

The BBC reports she had broken her back after falling at home in 2016, and had been bed-bound for some years, but continued acting.

Karen was married to actor and comedian Terry Duggan until he died in 2008.

She moved to London at 17, and was born Ann McCall in South Africa.
