BBC Celebrity MasterChef viewers 'spit tea out' after Nancy Dell'Olio and Paul Chuckle's food blunder

Celebrity MasterChef has finally returned to screens as viewers get to see familiar faces swap their usual comfort zones - from the stage to the pitch - to put their skills in the kitchen to the test.

The first episode, which aired on Wednesday night (August 10), saw media personality Nancy Dell'Olio, Children's TV star Paul Chuckle, former Love Island star Faye Winter, McFly's Danny Jones and comedian Kae Kurd kick off the competition. And it's fair to say it wasn't all plain sailing for the amateur cooks.

Those tuning into the BBC One show, which saw judges John Torode and Greg Wallace return, were left 'spitting their tea' out after Nancy and Paul made the exact same cooking blunder.

The pair needed to whip up their own coleslaw and in order to do so, they began frying the ingredients but as many people were quick to point out on social media, the side dish is always served with fresh and uncooked ingredients. It came as they were tasked with re-creating a South Korean fried chicken dish accompanied by an Asian slaw.

And viewers flocked to social media to comment. @Ariadne_Reviews tweeted: "Paul Chuckle flash frying coleslaw has ENDED ME #CelebrityMasterChef." @GeeMack81071233 said: "I cannot cope with Nancy cooking her coleslaw #CelebrityMasterChef."

@NiamhsDaddy shared: "Literally spat my tea when they said 'Nancy is cooking her coleslaw' #CelebrityMasterChef." @xstephster commented: "HAHAHAHAHA why they all cooking coleslaw?!?!?! #CelebrityMasterChef." @_AvrilH_ wrote: "Cooked coleslaw? WTF? #CelebrityMasterChef." @Sebsmummy asked: "Who the heck cooks coleslaw?? #CelebrityMasterChef."

And the gaffe may not have helped Italian lawyer Nancy, who is most famous for her relationship with Sven-Göran Eriksson, as she lost out to her cooking rivals, becoming the first contestant to leave the competition.

In the first round of the show Nancy was given Bramley cooking apples as her ingredient to showcase, which she turned into a desert with custard and peaches but no pastry, which didn't really hit the spot with the judges as John branded an"‘interesting creation" but in the end it was "mushy".

After slaw-gate, the former Strictly Come Dancing star opted to make a dish her mother had taught her during childhood, the traditional Italian classic melanzana parmigiana. But in the end it was Nancy who was sent packing but not without a few compliments about her choice of attire in the kitchen.

"The celebrity leaving us is Nancy," John announced before adding: "Love your heels, love your style, thank you very much – you’re leaving us."
