BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent makes first TV appearance since ‘splitting from husband’

Sally Nugent returned to BBC Breakfast appearance on Monday after news of her marriage split.

The broadcaster, 51, joined her co-host, Jon Kay, on the red sofa two days after it was reported that she and her husband Gavin Hawthorn, 52, have separated after 13 years.

The journalist was notably not wearing her wedding ring as she presented live from the BBC studios, marking her first TV appearance following the news.

It was claimed over the weekend that the couple, who have a teenage son, had unfortunately parted ways as their lives “moved in different directions”.

A source told MailOnline: “It’s very sad but they are no longer together.

“I think they tried to tough it out for quite a while as they didn’t want to split up if they could possibly help it for the sake of their son, but they clearly couldn’t make a go of it.

Nugent was joined on Monday’s show by colleague Jon Kay (BBC)

“They’ve both been very guarded about the reasons behind their growing apart, but it’s been plain for a while that they had been and now it’s obvious that they haven’t been able to resolve that despite clearly trying for some time.”

The outlet also reported that Hawthorn, a former senior Pets at Home marketing executive, had moved out of their £1.3m home in Greater Manchester.

Nugent replaced Louise Minchin in late 2021 on BBC Breakfast following a successful stint covering major sporting events including football World Cups, for the broadcaster.

At the time, she said of landing the role: “I’m absolutely thrilled to become the new presenter of BBC Breakfast and bring the nation the latest news, top entertainment guests and stories that matter every week.

“It’s an honour to take the reins from Louise and be part of the UK’s most-watched breakfast show.”

The Standard has contacted Sally Nugent’s rep for comment.
