BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay slams Oscars over Will Smith V Chris Rock smackdown controversy

Jon Kay was discussing the one thing that we are all thinking about today while hosting BBC Breakfast on Monday morning – the astonishing Will Smith vs Chris Rock smackdown that happened live at the Oscars.

The 52-year-old morning news show host was as shocked as everyone else by the scenes of violence that unfolded live during Sunday night’s ceremony which saw 53-year-old Will slap 57-year-old Chris square across the face in front of a shocked A List crowd.

The incident took place after comedian Chris made a cheap joke about Will’s 50-year-old wife Jada Pinkett Smith branding her “G.I Jane 2” in relation to her bald head – cruelly mocking her new look after she previously opened up about sharing her hair after suffering from alopecia.

The headline-grabbing moment certainly ensured that the Oscars – which have been in decline in recent years in terms of viewing figures and must-see talking points – are on everyones lips today.

Addressing the drama, Jon said: “It is extraordinary. A ceremony which is normally so tightly controlled and so pre-prepared, and has been accused of being quite boring over the last few years...

"All of a sudden this real, emotional, dramatic moment in front of millions!

"It is what has killed the Oscars, is that every joke has been rehearsed and rehearsed and rehearsed, until it isn't funny. It's a long evening to get through, often, and you're waiting for occasionally a moment where something happens.

"And then this, which was just utterly inexplicable. So out of character for Will Smith."

Jon and co-star Sally Nugent were later speaking to a correspondent live in Los Angeles who was outside a post-awards party.

Jon asked: "It'll be interesting to see - will Will Smith turn up?"

Sally offered: “Who knows?"

Jon pressed on: "Will Chris Rock turn up?"

Sally then said: "We'll know in the next few hours where they might be. Are they going to talk to each other?"

And this prompted Jon to let out a breath through his teeth as he admitted: "I don't know."

Sunday night’s drama dragged the Academy Awards into disrepute with the live studio audience looking unsure if the incident was planned, approved, staged or genuine.

Titters erupted when Will stormed the stage and slapped Chris – only for the room to fall silence as will raged “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!” once back in his seat.

Will himself later tearfully apologised as he made his acceptance speech after scooping the best actor award, saying: "I want to apologise to the Academy, I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees."

He continued: "This is a beautiful moment and I'm not crying for winning an award, it's not about winning an award for me, it's about being able to shine a light on all of the people.

"Art imitates life, I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams, but love will make you do crazy things."

Meanwhile, Los Angeles police confirmed they will not be arresting Will as Chris has refused to press charges.

A spokesperson for the force says it is "aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards programme...[which] involved one individual slapping another".

"The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report."
