Jon Kay and Nina Warhurst were forced to apologise and issue an explanation as they hosted BBC Breakfast. The pair were back at the helm of the BBC One news programme on Tuesday (September 20), the day after the broadcaster aired blanket coverage of the Queen's state funeral.
Jon typically presents alongside co-host Sally Nugent on a Tuesday but the 51-year-old was nowhere to be seen on the first show following the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. Nina, however, has regularly been seen holding down the fort solo while Jon and Sally ditched the Salford studio in recent days to appear outside Westminster and Buckingham Palace.
On today's show, as they both appeared on the famous red sofa, Nina asked her co-host what it was like being in London over the past week, to which he responded: "It's been a privilege. It's been remarkable. It's been extraordinary." He added: "We've spoken to thousands of people on Breakfast. It's been a moment, a moment we will always remember."
But during the show, a problem occurred and it caused chaos among viewers. The handy red clock which usually displays the current time for those watching at home disappeared from view at around 6:26am this morning. The disappearance of the clock had prompted a number of viewers to flock to social media to ask where it was.
@AnfieldRdYNWA asked: "What happened to the clock? #BBCBreakfast." @NadzyNadz echoed: "Whats happened to your clock this morning? Not showing @BBCBreakfast #BBCBreakfast #noclock." @BCollier2012 added: "#bbcbreakfast As a mark of respect for Her Majesty The Queen, BBC Breakfast has removed its clock.."
Jon later declared "our clock’s broken" as he held up his hands in disbelief. Nina then commented: "Well it's disappeared, our clock has disappeared."
Jon added: "It’s causing chaos for lots of you this morning. You’ve been in touch this morning saying you don’t know what to do, you don’t know what the time is." Jon himself then informed viewers of the correct time, volunteering to be the talking clock until the problem was fixed.
Nina then stepped in and said: "Apologies for that. We are working on it. We’re going to try and get the clock back this morning but we will update you on the time as and when." After cutting to a local new bulletin, the presenters were once again seen without the clock alongside them on screen.
Jon said: "Good morning! We’ve got the… Oh, no, we haven’t got the clock back," upon realising the digital ticker was still absent. Eventually, the clock made its comeback to which Jon cheered: "We’ve got it back! Okay, calm down. We’re back to normal." Nina then quipped: "We can start properly now, can’t we?"
