Carol Kirkwood nearly ruined her fiancé Steve's romantic proposal.
The BBC Breakfast weather presenter appeared on The One Show today, where she discussed her recent happy news about her partner Steve proposing to her during a romantic picnic by the river.
Carol revealed her engagement live on air in May and was quickly congratulated by her BBC Breakfast colleagues Sally Nugent and Jon Kay as she reported from the Chelsea Flower Show.
But now opening up about the romantic and sweet moment, Carol confessed she actually nearly ruined the whole thing - as she was convinced he was just joking with her - and didn't mean it for real.
Speaking on The One Show today, Carol revealed more details about her fiancé's beautiful proposal, sharing: "He took me by surprise. We went for a picnic down by the river and we were just sitting there and he was just fumbling a bit.
"I thought 'What's the matter with you?', and the next thing, he's on his knee and he had the ring and he proposed."
She admits she nearly "ruined" it though, by thinking it was just all some big joke.
"I thought he was joking. I ruined it! I told him, 'Oh you're having a laugh,' and Steve then told me, 'No, seriously. I've got the ring.' Then I said 'Yes, of course I'll marry you! I was delighted," she added.
At the time, Carol was presenting from the flower show as Sally helped her share the news.
"I’m a little bit concerned about you this morning. I don’t know how you’re managing to stand up with that giant rock on your left hand, Carol," Sally said, as Carol replied: "Oh that one, thank you Sal. It is rather nice, I got engaged."
Sally then shared: "Congratulations from all of us, it’s the happiest news, we are so so delighted, congratulations. Can we confirm to the nation what’s happened?" with Carol quickly adding: "Oh thank you, yes, I think you just have Sal! Yes, I got engaged, we got engaged when we were on holiday, so it’s lovely news and we’re both thrilled. So, thank you!"
Carol previously revealed Steve picked the ring himself and she was "very impressed" with his choice.
"My other half, Steve, chose it himself. I was very impressed – and he got the size right. It's what they call a halo ring with a central diamond and then diamonds around it. It is gorgeous," she said recently.
