BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood engaged as she flashes sparkly engagement ring on air

BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood was all smiles at the Chelsea Flower Show this morning (May 23) as she showed off her sparkly engagement ring. The 59-year-old's enviable new piece of jewellery was pointed out by presenter Sally Nugent, as she and Jon Kay spoke to Carol from the studio via video link.

Carol has previously remained pretty hush about her new man, and is usually warm yet very professional during her reports. But the Scottish BBC Breakfast star could not contain her giggles this morning, as Sally pointed out her new ring.

At the end of Carol's report, Sally said: "I'm a little bit concerned about you this morning. I don't know how you're managing to stand up with that giant rock on your left hand, Carol."

Carol gushed: "Thank you Sal! It is rather nice - I got engaged."

"It's the happiest news we are so, so delighted," Sally replied. "Congratulations. Can we confirm to the nation what's happened?"

Carol confirmed: "Thank you. Yes, I think you just have, Sal.

"Yes, we got engaged - I got engaged when we were on holiday.

"So it’s lovely news and we’re both thrilled. Thank you."

The studio erupted into a round of applause as Jon said: "Oh we’re all thrilled, we’re all so chuffed for you, Carol. On behalf of all the team here and everybody watching I’m sure. Absolutely delighted."

Everyone in the BBC Breakfast studio appeared to be over the moon for Carol (BBC)

Carol, who got divorced from her husband of 18 years, Jimmy Kirkwood, in 2008, recently opened up about her love life in an interview with Prima Magazine. Although she did not reveal the name of her new man, the former Strictly contestant told the publication that her partner is 'extremely handsome'.

She enthused: "I don't want to say too much about my boyfriend, but I will say that he is very kind and very funny - he's always making me laugh. And extremely handsome, as well.

"He always makes me a cup of tea before I go to work in the morning, which is very romantic - it's 2.45am and he often leaves me a little love note for when I come home from work. That, to me, is worth a million red roses."

The BBC Breakfast presenter then added: "He is the best thing that's ever happened to me, without a shadow of a doubt."
