BBC Breakfast presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were left stunned on Monday’s show when their broadcast was interrupted by a man in his underwear.

The pair were interviewing Gary McKee, who has run a marathon every day this year to raise awareness for cancer research, when they were greeted by an unexpected visitor.

As McKee spoke to them about his incredible feat, the hosts were left distracted when they spotted a gentleman taking out his bins in just his boxers in the background.

As the cancer campaigner began to talk about his plan for his next marathon, Kay began to laugh as he commented that there was "someone in swimming trunks behind him".

Nugent attempted to alert McKee to their surprise screen invader as she chuckled with Kay in the studio, but the runner didn’t turn around in time.

She said: "Gary, look over your left shoulder! I think someone was just about to put his bin out in his pants! We’ve all done it..."

The presenter then joked that it "sounded like a good reason to run in the opposite direction" before they thanked him and cut back to the studio.

Kay assured viewers that they will "catch up with Gary’s story in the weeks and months ahead" as the presenters tried to contain their laughter and the broadcaster wondered "what was going through that poor guy’s mind".

Nugent couldn’t contain his laughter as he lamented that the man had "ran away" once he’d seen the camera crew at the end of his road and made a quick dash back up his driveway.

When the show returned after cutting to a BBC iPlayer advert the duo were still laughing about the unfortunate incident.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: "What in the holy hell is going on here? Who goes to put the bin out in swimming trunks?"

Another penned: "Lmao, this guy in the background," with a laughing emoji.
