BBC Bargain Hunt fans squirm as couple makes 'soul destroying' loss

Bargain Hunt fans were left "cringing" as a couple on the BBC show made a "soul destroying" loss.

On Tuesday, host Christina Trevanion welcomed two new teams to the show. Married couple Farrell and David, who referred to themselves as "Bargain Hunt ninjas" made up the red team, while Will and Prussia, also married, were in the blue fleeces.

Each team was given £300 to shop at a venue in Wrexham, with whoever made the biggest profit, or smallest loss, to be declared the winner.

Farrell and David were the first to have their purchases auctioned. A set of two silver-plated dog ornaments, bought for £12, sold for £15 and put them £3 up.

Unfortunately, this is where their luck seemed to run out. A ceramic basket, bought for £105, sold at a £35 loss and brought back just £70. Similarly a wooden toolbox, bought for £34, sold for just £25.

And a pair of square stools, bought on their behalf by expert Jonathan Pratt, made the biggest loss of all. The two chairs, which were 1930s-inspired but likely to have been made in the 80s, cost the team £40.

The bidding started at £20, but as nobody came forward, this dwindled to £10, and then £5, before the stools sold for a single pound.

Fans at home were left squirming as Farrell had his head in his hands. Taking to Twitter, Albert said: "£40 for a couple of tatty old barstools?! The junk in my attic is looking more like a treasure trove every day", while Tony said: "That must be the absolute worst auction on Bargain hunt ever".

Ashley said: "Cringing, I think £1 was a generous offer", and Mick said: "Everyone with eyes saw that coming". Paul said: "Unsurprising, so tacky" and added it was "soul destroying" in a follow-up tweet.

Despite the poor response, however, the red team won the programme, with a total loss of £80, as the blues were £111 down.

Bargain Hunt airs weekdays at 12.15pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
