Jonathan Liew's match report
Full-time: Bayern Munich 7-1 RB Salzburg (agg: 8-2)
Bayern are into the last eight of the Champions League again. Their progress was practically guaranteed after Robert Lewandowski struck a hat-trick in the first 22 minutes here, taking the Germans beyond a team who had given them a proper fright in the first leg. Here Salzburg were vibrant at times but they made too many errors, which Bayern punished severely. Bayern made mistakes too and could be in trouble against a better team, but they were deserving and emphatic winners today.
GOAL! Bayern 7-1 Salzburg (Sané 86) (agg: 8-2)
Salzburg are caught playing out from the back. Bayern came roaring at them. Lewandowski backflicks the ball into the path of Sané, who races on to it and into the left-hand side of the box, then thrashes the ball into the roof of the net. Nice goal, and a chastening experience for Salzburg.
GOAL! Bayern 6-1 Salzburg (Müller 83) (agg: 7-2)
Muller plays a one-two with Lewandowski, then swaps passes with Sane and slapshoots the ball into the bottom corner from 10 yards. Not much Salzburg could do about that one.
78 min: More fine work by Aaronson, but Kjaergaard can’t get his pass under control. Pity, as he had found space in the Bayern box and might have helped himself to another goal.
77 min: Köhn surges off his line to dive on Müller’s through-ball, to the annoyance of Sané, who was hoping to get a decisive prod on it.
75 min: That goal has given Salzburg renewed zing. Bayern are trying to stifle it.
73 min: A lovely curling pass from deep by Aaronson invites Sesko to run on to it. But Upamecano is faster and gets there first.
GOAL! Bayern 5-1 Salzburg (Kjaergaard 71) (agg: 6-2)
Salzburg earn their reward for not giving up. Aaronson leads a counter-attack, zooming forward from the halfway line before nudging the ball to Kjaergaard, running on to it at the left-hand side of the Bayern box. And the 18-year-old hammers a first-time shot into the net top corner, leaving Neuer motionless!
Updated
68 min: Sané’s cross from the left is shoved behind by Ulmer. Salzburg clear it.
66 min: Salzburg substitution: Tijani on, Camara off.
65 min: Bayern substitutions: Choupo-Moting, Roca and Nianzou and on; Coman, Musiala and Sule off.
63 min: Salzburg substitutions: Kjaergaard and Sesko on, Adeyemi and Adamu off.
62 min: Lewandowski curls the freekick over the bar.
61 min: Camara trips Coman, who’s turning on the style. Before the freekick is taken, Bayern make a change: Upamecano on, Hernandez off.
58 min: Coman sells a whole bag of lollipops to Kristensen, then his cross is put out for a corner. Müller tries to flick the delivery into the net but loops it up into the air, leaving easy picking for Köhn.
56 min: Adeyemi, who has not been able to exert the influence that he did in the first half of the first leg, wins a freekick mid-way inside the Bayern half. It’s clipped into the area but Bayern clear it easily.
GOAL! Bayern 5-0 Salzburg (Müller 54) (agg: 6-1)
At least that one didn’t come from a Salzburg mistakes. Rather Bayern played through their opponents with tremendous speed until Sané rolled the ball to Müller, who turned and fired low into the net from 16 yards.
Updated
49 min: It’s all become very easy for Bayern. They’ve slowed the play right down and Salzburg still can’t get the ball off them.
47 min: Lewandowski’s shot from the edge of the area is deflected wide by Wober.
46 min: Salzburg substitutions: Piatkowski and Sucic on, Seiwald and Solet off.
Bayern substitution: Sarr on, Gnabry off.
“Lewandowski won’t care but this hat-trick has to be up there with Harry Kane’s hat-trick against Albania in 2018 on a list of all-time stupidest hat-tricks,” opines Kári Tulinius.
Half-time: Bayern 4-0 Salzburg (agg: 5-1)
This tie is over. But the intrigue isn’t. It’ll still be interesting to see whether Salzburg can get the goal that their lively attacking deserves and whether they can avert more defensive mistakes: they’ve been ruthlessly punished for misjudgements at the back already, and Bayern look minded to treat themselves to more goals.
42 min: Bayern are lording it over the visitors now, flushed with confidence and thirsty for more goals. This is turning into a real character-building exercise for the inexperienced visitors.
39 min: A corner is played to Sané, who whips a cross in from the right with his left foot. Pavard’s backheader drifts just beyond the far post.
37 min: Lewandowski lifts the ball over the bar from 18 yards after a nifty one-two with Müller.
36 min: Coman zigzags down the left and then veers in-field to swap passes with Müller. A well-timed intervention by Solet sabotages the 1-2 and, in all probability, prevents a fifth goal. Or should that be postpones?
34 min: Salzburg aren’t quitting. They’re still quite pesky in attack. Neuer is even forced into a save by a rasping low shot from 20 yards by Ulmer.
GOAL! Bayern 4-0 Salzburg (Gnabry 31) (agg: 5-1)
Oh dear. More Salzburg mistakes are punished mercilessly. Camara tried to dribble his way out of truble at the edge of his box but was quickly relieved of the ball. Bayern worked it across the face of the area and over to Gnabry at the right-hand side of the box. His shot wasn’t especially powerful but the keeper’s attempt to save it was flimsy, and Salzburg have a giant mountain to climb.
Updated
30 min: A tremendous block by Aaronson at the edge of the box stops a shot by Musiala at source.
28 min: Freekick to Salzburg mid-way inside the Bayern half. They try a clever rehearsed routine but they only confuse themselves, and Bayern walk the ball clear.
26 min: Salzburg must be reeling. They’ve played well overall - and should really have scored at least once - but they’ve been punished severely for mistakes and now hope has practically vanished. How will they respond: fight or fold?
GOAL! Bayern 3-0 Salzburg (Lewandowski 23) (agg: 4-1)
Bayern’s grip has just got a heck of a lot tighter! Lewandowski takes advantage of a monumental mix-up in the visiting defence, challenges the keeper for a bouncing ball outside the area and, after the ball rebounds off him and against the post, taps into the empty net.
Updated
GOAL! Bayern 2-0 Salzburg (Lewandowski pen 21) (agg: 3-1)
Lewandowski changes his technique - adding a little skip to his run-up - but the finish is the same, low and hard as the keeper falls the other way. Bayern have a tight grip on the tie now.
Updated
20 min: Penalty! The referee has been told, correctly, that Wöber kicked Lewandowski’s standing foot in the box.
19 min: Lewandowski spins at the edge of the area and is taken out again by Wöber: it’s almost exactly the same movement and offence as led to the penalty. This time the referee awards a freekick just outside the area but VAR is checking: the contact may have taken place in the box ....
17 min: Bayern have the lead but still look a little sloppy all over the pitch and especially vulnerable at the back. Indeed, if Salzburg had finished better, they would already be level.
15 min: A mistake by Pavard ... and then another ... and suddenly Seiwald has a free shot at goal from 10 yards! He slashes the bouncing ball towards goal, but Neuer is able to touch it over the bar.
GOAL! Bayern 1-0 Salzburg (Lewandowski pen 12) (agg: 2-1)
The Pole rams it low into one corner as the keeper jumps towards the other.
Updated
11 min: So much laissez-faire! The referee points to the spot after Wöber is turned by Lewandowski in the box and chops him down. A blatant foul!
Updated
10 min: The French referee is taking quite a laissez-faire approach so far, allowing some muscular challenges, and that’s helping the flow and mood. Good!
8 min: Coman makes gains again in the opposing half, then feeds Müller, who tries to dink it over the defence for the on-rushing Kimmich. But he overhits the pass.
7 min: Sané swipes across the ball, attempting to generate reverse swing, so to speak, on a shot from 25 yards. It doesn’t happen, the ball just wobbles several yards wide.
5 min: Hernandez gets mugged as he tries to play his way out from the back. Capaldo motors down the right and crosses low to the near post. Cleared, with difficulty! The Bavarian defensive weaknesses that Salzburg exposed in the first leg are being shown again today.
Updated
3 min: Salzburg hurtle down the other end. From the left-hand byline the ball is pulled back for Capaldo .... Coman throws himself in front of the shot to turn it behind for a corner. Seiwald delivers ... and Kristensen flicks a header a yard wide of the far post. An action-packed start!
2 min: It’s a frenetic start, neither side giving the other a moment on the ball. Despite that, pass snappily through their opponents and work a shooting chance after 60 seconds. Müller fed Lewandowski, who tried to drill a low shot into the net from the edge of the area. Saved!
1 min: Salzburg, clad all in white, set the ball rolling.
Out stride the teams, with Salzburg betraying no sign of anxiety. Indeed, Bayern’s players look stoney-faced: focus or nerves?

Preamble
Hello. The first thing to say is probably also the last thing that Salzburg manager Matthias Jaissle will tell his players before they march out on to the pitch: Bayern are beatable. Salzburg should know that because they should have beat them in the first leg, which they led 1-0 until Kingsley Coman’s late equaliser. Coman was by far Bayern’s most dangerous attacker that day and it will be interesting to see how Salzburg go about containing him today, But Salzburg caused plenty of trouble to the Bayern’s defence, with Adeyemi, in particular, continually tormenting them with his speed and movement. This tie represents Salzburg’s maiden appearance in the Champions League Last 16 – and it’s not out of the question (just quite unlikely) that they will mark the occasion by knocking out one of the favourites. Here we go!
