Bayern Munich believes that FC Barcelona may be willing to part ways with star defender Ronald Araujo if the right offer comes along. According to reports from SPORT, Bayern Munich is interested in acquiring Araujo and believes that Barcelona's financial troubles could prompt them to accept a bid of around $108 million (€100 million) for the talented 24-year-old.
The initial interest from Bayern was first reported by BILD via SKY, stating that Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel personally reached out to Araujo to explain his vision and the role he sees the Uruguayan playing in their team. Mundo Deportivo later added that Araujo is content in Barcelona but is waiting to see how the remainder of the season unfolds.
Despite Barcelona's reluctance to let go of their promising center-back, the club recognizes that their dire financial situation might necessitate such a decision. SPORT describes the potential sale of Araujo as a 'painful decision' for Barcelona, considering his potential as a future captain. However, it may be a necessary step in order to rebuild the team and generate the resources needed.
Currently, Barcelona has three experienced center-backs in addition to Araujo, namely Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, and Inigo Martinez. Additionally, 17-year-old La Masia graduate Pau Cubarsi has impressed recently, even partnering with Araujo in central defense on occasion.
Aware of the interest in Araujo, Barcelona is reportedly preparing to offer him a contract extension in the coming weeks. However, Bayern Munich is keen on acquiring the defender and is willing to offer double the financial benefits that the financially-strapped Barcelona can provide. Furthermore, Bayern offers Araujo a realistic chance of competing for the Champions League title each year. In contrast, Barcelona has only reached the last 16 stage of the competition twice in the past four seasons.
Both Araujo and Barcelona face tough decisions in the coming months. RAC1 reported that a single high-profile sale might not be sufficient to alleviate Barcelona's financial issues, potentially leading to the departure of other players like Frenkie de Jong and Raphinha.
For instance, Manchester United reportedly made a bid of $91.6 million (€85 million) for De Jong in 2022, which Barcelona accepted. However, the Dutch midfielder turned down the opportunity to move to the English Premier League giants. Likewise, Tottenham Hotspur has offered $75.4 million (€70 million) for Raphinha, with Liverpool also expressing interest in him, as per SPORT.
It remains to be seen how the transfer window unfolds and whether Bayern Munich's pursuit of Araujo will come to fruition. Both Barcelona and the player himself must carefully weigh their options and make decisions that will impact their respective futures.
