Bayern Munich chief executive Oliver Kahn has admitted that the German heavyweights 'briefly discussed' the possibility of signing Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer transfer window.
The Portugal captain, who will be hoping to bag a starting berth when United face Cypriot outfit Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday evening, wanted to leave Old Trafford during the summer in pursuit of Champions League football. United, however, quickly stepped in and made it clear that they were not prepared to sell the 37-year-old.
Ronaldo missed almost all of United's pre-season preparations, missing the tour of Thailand and Australia completely because of 'personal reasons'. He has made just one start in the Premier League so far this season and was left on the bench during Sunday's 6-3 hammering against Manchester City.

Such is his lack of opportunities so far this term, there is a growing expectation that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner will push to leave Old Trafford once again in the January window. However, his wages could prove problematic for many suitors, although a transfer fee itself is unlikely to cause too many issues because of his contractural status at United.
He was most heavily linked with the likes of Chelsea and Napoli during the summer, as well as the odd connection with Bayern. Now, former Germany international goalkeeper Kahn has confirmed that he was discussed internally at the Allianz Arena, but admits the idea of bringing him in was quickly moved on.
"We briefly discussed Ronaldo at Bayern and Dortmund probably did too," said Kahn, speaking to SportBILD. "We also see the big picture of the Bundesliga.
"Of course, superstars like Ronaldo are an important factor in attracting attention to the league. He is one of the greatest of the last decade. But we quickly dismissed that."
Ronaldo is out-of-contract at United at the end of this season, but the Reds do have the option to extend his stay by a further year. He has scored one goal in eight appearances this term.
