The National Weather Service has extended its heat advisory for the inland Bay Area through 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, with valley highs forecast from the mid-90s to near 105 degrees. The advisory covers all nine Bay Area counties away from the immediate coast, plus the Santa Cruz Mountains, most of San Benito County and southern Monterey County, according to CBS San Francisco. At the same time, the Bay Area Air District kept a Spare the Air alert for unhealthy ozone in place through Tuesday, Oct. 6.
For many households, the problem is not one hot afternoon. It is several days of heat stacked on top of smog, with warm nights in the hills that give the body little chance to recover. That combination matters most for people living with asthma, heart disease or lung disease, and for the parents, adult children and caregivers who look after them.
