'Battlefield 6' Gameplay Reveal Trailer Shows Off Wake Island Ahead of Return to the Game

Electronic Arts (EA) and Battlefield Studios is bringing back a franchise favorite alongside its "Top Gun-themed" crossover event.

Wake Island is making its return on August 18, and a new gameplay reveal trailer shows off what gamers can look forward to.

Wake Island Returns on August 18

According to a report by GameSpot, the much-loved Wake Island made its first appearance on "Battlefield 1942."

The map is actually inspired by Wake Atoll, which is a coral atoll in Micronesia, which can be found in the Pacific Ocean. This location is where a World War II battle took place.

GamingBolt notes in its report that the returning map is meant to feel both familiar and fresh at the same time. The map includes a shipwreck that players can investigate, and GamingBolt describes the map as a whole as the perfect place to try out the airplane controls that will come with the "Top Gun" update.

EA has said that the "rebuilt" map will focus heavily on naval warfare.

The gameplay trailer for Wake Island can be viewed below.

Exploring Wake Island

EA notes in its developer map guide that Wake Island comes with the following sectors:

  • Taussig Radar Station - A NATO surveillance station where the objective usually lies characterized by multiple routes and supporting buildings
  • Heel Point Barracks - Three adjacent buildings that can serve as sniping spots or places of cover should it be reduced to rubble
  • Hanger One - The focal point of Wake Island that has a large interior space and heavy foot traffic due to its proximity to the middle of the map
  • Ammunition and Ordnance Depot - Six ammo structures that can serve as great cover pieces but have the potential to explode. A key objective for capture is typically found here
  • True Energy Hydrocarbons Fuel Storage - The center of the complex is where the objective typically can be found in most game modes
  • Toyoshima Docks - An inlet with some surrounding buildings and structures, it can be the setting of exciting naval warfare moments
  • Shipwreck of the MV Cetus - A brand-new point of interest, it can be used for shelter, and its in-tact AA gun can be used against aerial and naval vehicles.

'Top Gun' Crossover Event

According to EA, Battlefield 6's upcoming "Top Gun" crossover brings several elements from the iconic film franchise into the shooter. Players will gain access to the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the legendary F-14 Tomcat, both inspired by the aircraft featured in the movies. The update will also introduce themed cosmetics and new gameplay experiences centered on aerial combat.

The collaboration also adds three fully voiced characters from "Top Gun: Maverick." These include Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, portrayed by Miles Teller; Lt. Robert "Bob" Floyd, portrayed by Lewis Pullman; and Adm. Solomon "Warlock" Bates, portrayed by Charles Parnell. Reports indicate that the actors returned to voice their in-game counterparts for the crossover.

Beyond new characters and aircraft, the crossover introduces two limited-time modes inspired by the franchise's high-speed dogfights. "Top Gun: Carrier Strike" focuses on large-scale battles between aircraft carriers, while "Top Gun: Fighter Sweep" offers jet-only combat on a modified battlefield designed for aerial warfare. The event also coincides with the return of Wake Island, reimagined for modern land, sea, and air combat.
