Batgirl film shot in Glasgow reportedly scrapped by Warner Bros after poor screen tests

Warner Brothers is reported to have scrapped the upcoming Batgirl film after poor screen-testing results.

The major Hollywood movie was filmed entirely in Glasgow with the city transformed into Gotham by set builders, including alterations to shop fronts and cars.

The DC film, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah was set to star major names including Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser, JK Simmons and Leslie Grace in the main role. Production reportedly cost an estimated 70 million dollars (£57.6 million) and the film was scheduled for release in late 2022.

But following test screenings the studio decided to shelve the production completely, and it will no longer appear in theatres or on streaming service HBO Max, according to US publication The New York Post.

Filming took place around Glasgow from January to April of this year with multiple parts of the city centre brought to a standstill during high-octane scenes, including George Square.

The movie was given 20 times more council funding than any other production in the last five years. Glasgow City Council agreed to give Warner Bros £150,000 to shoot the entire production in the city.

Despite this, many local businesses claimed they were left struggling due to filming crews blocking off customers amid the road closures.

Batgirl was due to focus on Barbara Gordon, played by Grace, the daughter of Gotham police commissioner Jim Gordon.

DC has been contacted for comment.
