Bastian Schweinsteiger makes astonishing Liverpool FC claim after defeat to Manchester United

Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has claimed that Liverpool were the better team during the Reds' Monday night victory.

Erik ten Hag won his first Premier League match in front of a roaring Old Trafford crowd as his side beat Liverpool 2-1. Jurgen Klopp's team were put under pressure by United from the start as Jadon Sancho scored the opening goal after just 16 minutes.

Liverpool held on until half-time as United kept applying the pressure, but it took just eight minutes after the break before the Reds scored a second. Marcus Rashford calmly slotted the ball past Alisson in goal after perfectly timing his run to find himself one-on-one with the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Despite a late Mohamed Salah goal, Ten Hag's side held on to breathe life into their Premier League season with a much-needed win. However, not everyone has been keen to praise United's performance, as their former midfielder admitted he thought Liverpool were the better side.

Schweinsteiger told BBC Radio 5 Live : "You know, of course I support United and I'm very happy they won. But was it a great performance? I wouldn't say so. Liverpool were the better team with much more possession. They couldn't finish their last passes otherwise they would have won the game."

Despite the admission, the former Red did find some praise for United's performance as he applauded the player's commitment on the pitch.

He added: "United did have the right attitude and spirit though. Against the ball they were fighting and running. In my eyes also, the supporters won the match.

"They have got a very good manager now and I think he is the right man for the position. But was it the way United want to play football? I don't think so. That was survival mode."
