Baseball fans clash in ugly brawl in stands during blowout MLB game

Fans of the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates got into a brawl at PNC Park after the Mets got throttled 14-7 on the road.

A video posted to Twitter appears to show fans of both National League teams pushing, shoving, and hitting each other, all while the Mets were at the plate. A fan in a black Mets jersey, who was involved in the scuffle decided to find some high ground before throwing himself back into the fray with a right-handed punch.

Stadium security then got involved and managed to stop the brawl for good with thousands of spectators looking on. What sparked the fan brawl is currently unclear.

The Mets' performance on the field wasn't any prettier than the antics of fans off it. The Mets were tied with the Pirates heading into the bottom of the third but spectacularly blew up with two costly errors. Francisco Lindor and Eduardo Escobar were the men guilty of mistakes which cost the Mets five runs, and the loss leaves the Mets 30-34 in the NL East.

"Mets fans got more fight than the team apparently," a Twitter user said. Another viewer added: "I've always said I rarely ever see or hear about any fights at Pirates games. And then this ... Definitely more entertaining than the game for the Mets fans involved, though!"

It was a mental mistake — I tried to rush the play,” Lindor said of his mistake. “That’s been my errors this year, trying to finish the play without having the baseball in my glove. It’s unacceptable. Today is on me. That play right there was going to close out the inning. Megill was pitching good and had the momentum.”

Lindor then added: "I want to say that it’s part of the season, but I have been saying that way too long. It’s time to turn the page. It’s time to start to be better. We have got to be better.”

The Pirates are hosting the Mets two more times this weekend at the PNC Park and they'll be hoping for two more straight-forward wins to keep them at the top of the NL Central, where they are narrowly edging out the Milwaukee Brewers. The expected absence of the Mets' best hitter is also a boost for the Pirates. Mets star Pete Alonso is out for three-to-four weeks.
