Baseball bat attacker back behind bars after allegedly intimidating sister

Newcastle courthouse.

A MAN who brutally bashed three men in three separate attacks over the space of a few days in 2021, stomping on one man's head and repeatedly striking two others with a baseball bat, is back behind bars three months after being released on parole.

Cameron Reginald Welsh, now 26, of Woodberry, was arrested last week and charged over a domestic violence-related intimidation after allegedly threatening his sister during an argument on September 20.

Welsh had only been released on parole in June after he was jailed for a maximum of six years, with a non-parole period of three years for savagely attacking three men at New Lambton, Woodberry and Beresfield between June 2 and 5, 2021.

Welsh was arrested on September 23 and charged with domestic violence-related stalk/intimidation and appeared in Newcastle Local Court the following day.

He did not enter a plea, but made a bid to be released on conditional bail, which was refused because he had only just commenced serving a lengthy period on parole.

Welsh was taken back behind bars and now faces the prospect of having his parole revoked, meaning he could spend even more time in custody.

Back in 2021, Welsh appeared to be delusional and was rambling as he accused the three men - all acquaintances who did not know him well - of either raping one of his family members or having sex with his ex-partner.

None of the men knew what he was talking about.

In chilling scenes, Welsh lured one man, 28, back to a garage at New Lambton to smoke cannabis before repeatedly assaulting him over a number of hours.

"I'm going to bash the f--- out of you now," Welsh told the man.

When the man finally managed to flee, Welsh followed him to a nearby service station where the man was trying to get help. Welsh caught up with him and stomped on his head, leaving him with a severe traumatic brain injury.

The next night Welsh went to a house at Woodberry where he picked up a baseball bat and used it to repeatedly hit a man, 33, in the head and arm, fracturing his elbow.

The third victim was walking home from a friend's place when he heard someone in the bushes outside Francis Greenway High School. Welsh appeared and the pair were initially walking and talking before Welsh suddenly struck the man in the jaw while they were crossing the Beresfield railway bridge.

The victim, 24, tried to run but Welsh hit him in the leg with the bat before repeatedly striking him while he was on the ground.

Welsh later pleaded guilty and tried to get into a full-time residential rehabilitation but was unsuccessful.

He was given a "reduced" sentence after a judge found his poor mental health, substance abuse disorder and childhood trauma had a role to play in the savage beatings.

Judge Kate Traill found Welsh had "relatively good prospects of rehabilitation... provided he could remain drug free". But three months after his release, Welsh is back behind bars.
