Barry Robson has warned his Aberdeen players they've achieved nothing yet and has urged them to keep their foot on the gas in the race for third place.
The interim Pittodrie boss has reeled in Hearts and now has the Dons two points ahead of the Jambos. Should Celtic or Rangers win the Scottish Cup, then third place in the Premiership will be guaranteed European group stage football next season. Hearts managed it last year and have changed manager themselves in a bid to make it happen again, with Steven Naismitn replacing Robbie Neilson until the end of the season.
They’ll be hoping for a similar bounce to the one the Reds have enjoyed since binning Jim Goodwin and handing the reins to Robson. However, he;s remaining cautious ahead of the post-split run in and knows how quickly things can change if his team don’t maintain their recent high standards against Ross County on Friday night.
“They’ve taken to everything we’ve tried to do and have taken it on board and worked hard,” he said. “But as I said to them every time, we haven’t achieved anything yet. We’re getting to the business end of the season and it's huge for the football club and the plates.
“I’ve been in this game long enough to know that you have to keep at it. I know, with the experiences I've had, what’s round the corner. We can't take the foot off the gas at any point and we need to make sure we stay 100 per cent committed to everything that we’re trying to do every day.”
Asked whether he would want the job should he guide Aberdeen tot third and be offered on a permanent basis, Robson remained diplomatic. He told Sky Sports: “What we spoke about at the football club was taking it game by game. I do sound like I’m repeating myself with this but I promise you, that’s what we’re trying to do.
“I think we've managed to get the players and club into a good position at the minute. You can’t just say ‘aw yeah we’re going to finish third’ or any of these types of things. It’s always game by game and that’s what our focus is on.”
