Barry Ferguson reveals 'heated' Rangers fan encounters as Ibrox legend's shopping trip becomes Gio debate

Defiant Barry Ferguson reveals he's had arguments with Rangers fans over his shopping on whether Gio van Bronckhorst is still the man for the job. But he insists his old pal deserves a bit of patience - at least until the winter break.

Rangers have struggled for form in recent weeks, falling four points behind Celtic after last weekend's draw with Livingston and standing just one Champions League defeat away from the worst ever group stage showing in the competition's history. It's led to growing fan discontent over Van Bronckhorst, who many feel is stagnating in the job after less than a year in charge.

But Record Sport columnist Ferguson believes he's still the man for the job. And speaking on Go Radio, he admits he regularly has to argue that point with fans - and had one such "heated" debate over his shopping on Friday.

When asked if he still believed Gio deserved time, he said: "Yeah. I've had heated discussions with people out in the public, even when I go into shops. I had one today when I was out and about. They're not happy but I think he deserves at least until the winter break.

"He's got five big games coming up. It starts tomorrow, take one game at a time, but it's a brilliant game to have. Aberdeen coming, Jim's got a new team there, they play pretty open where normally Aberdeen would come and sit behind the ball and try and frustrate.

"I think they will come and try and have a go at Rangers so I think that will work in Rangers' favour. It will open spaces for the attack-minded players to go and do a bit of damage."
