Barry Ferguson on Rangers star who deserves 'another chance' and verdict over two possible arrivals

Barry Ferguson has named one Rangers player who deserves another chance due to having 'real quality'.

Michael Beale is set for a massive summer of transition with a number of ins and outs to take place in the transfer window. It's just one year on from the Light Blues' Europa League Final defeat to Frankfurt and the Ibrox legend can't quite believe the scale of the overhaul that is needed at his old club. The likes of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent are heading for the exit door as just two of a number of expected exits while two possible signings in the shape of Jose Cifuentes and Dujon Sterling have impressed Fergie from what he has seen of them.

The January additions of Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin have Rangers fans excited for what is to come due to the immediate impact they've made on the team. He reckons if the duo set the standard of the calibre of individual the 42-year-old plans to recruit then the rebuild will start a 'bright new era'.

But a number of players in the building can still play a part and Ferguson has named SEVEN that started on the bench that night in Seville as a group who can play a part. One particular name is one he'd love to see back fit and firing and is a huge fan.

Writing in is Daily Record column, he said: "I like the sound of some of the names that have been mentioned as possible new signings. I’ve had a look at Jose Cifuentes and the Ecuadorian seems like a real athlete from what I’ve seen of him. He’ll add real legs and bite to the midfield.

"Similarly, Dujon Sterling at Chelsea looks like a very decent prospect and it’s interesting that he can operate in the centre of defence but also at right back. That will give Tavernier and Goldson something to think about, even though they look like surviving the cull.

"With John Souttar finally fit and Yilmaz looking the part, you can see where Beale is going with this.

"And when you consider the impact made by the two players he signed in January - Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin - it’s no wonder Rangers fans are looking forward to what’s coming next.

"Put it this way, if these two set the standard for the players that Beale plans to recruit, in terms of both ability and character, then there’s every reason to believe that this rebuild will be the start of a bright new era.

"We all know that such drastic change can work one way or the other. But I really believe that Rangers need new people in, on and off the park, with different ideas and fresh energy. It feels like time for a blank canvas. Beale was in on the ground floor when Steven Gerrard built the team that got to Seville. Gio was lucky enough to inherit it.

"But now it’s Beale’s turn to build something entirely new and that extends to the bench from that Europa League final. On the night 12 subs were listed. Four of them - Aaron Ramsey, James Sands, Amad Diallo and Leon Balogun - have already left..

"I expect big Jon McLaughlin will be the next one to move on because he needs to find regular game time elsewhere. That leaves seven players - Steve Davis, Kemar Roofe, Scott Arfield, Fashion Sakala, Robby McCrorie, Leon King and Alex Lowry - and I think all of them still have a part to play in Beale’s squad next season.

"I know for a fact that Roofe is in Qatar right now doing his rehab and getting ready for a full pre-season. I would love to see him back fit and firing because, even though he’s been written off as dead wood, the guy has real quality. He deserves another chance.

"And even though Davis is getting on a bit, he comes into the same category. At the very least, after everything he’s done for the club, Rangers should give him a short term deal and provide him with the facilities to come back from a long term injury. His experience is invaluable to have around."
