Barry Ferguson in Rangers transfer challenge as Michael Beale told to 'beef up' key squad component

Barry Ferguson says Michael Beale must look to 'beef up' Rangers striking department after Kemar Roofe's injury blow.

The former Ibrox captain wants a key recruitment area to focus on the Light Blues frontmen, with Roofe's extra-time heroics in the Viaplay Cup semi-final against Aberdeen quickly extinguished by yet another injury. The luckless striker has spent the majority of last year on the recovery table and now must face a second opinion on his latest shoulder knock.

Ferguson believes that while Beale admitted the midfield area is something to bolster, with the likes of Norwich City star Todd Cantwell high on the agenda, that Rangers must recruit in the forward position. A reported bid for Swansea City forward Morgan Whittaker has been rejected but the ex-captain says a loan for a striker could be on the cards.

He told Go Radio: "It's a kick in the teeth for Rangers because they're short up top with [Antonio] Colak carrying an injury as well. Only real recognised centre-forward is [Alfredo] Morelos and his form hasn't been amazing.

"You can put [Fashion] Sakala through there but I'm sure that's a position Michael Beale may look at in the transfer window to maybe bring someone in on loan to beef up the forwards."

On Roofe, he said: "He's had no luck. A cameo appearance against Dundee United, he came on against Aberdeen and looked sharp, netting the winner.

"You see him going down and it looked to me like a normal fall that a player would have during a game but obviously its worse than we thought. It's bad news for Rangers and Roofe. He's suffered a lot of injuries but I've always said he's a top striker - a player I rate highly. The only issue you have is getting him on the pitch fully fit."
