Barry Ferguson played with Dwight Yorke and the Trinidad and Tobago star had all the talent in the world. But Fergie reckons his old mate is on a different planet if he thinks he can end the Old Firm duopoly with Aberdeen.
Yorke wants the Pittodrie vacancy after the Dons sacked Jim Goodwin and hasn't been shy in putting his name forward, even hoping Sir Alex Ferguson would put in a word for him. Former Sheffield United and Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder was the fans’ choice and was contacted by the Aberdeen board to gauge his interest. But he’s now ruled himself out of the running.
That’s unlikely to improve Yorke’s chances. But the former Aston Villa man, who is an ex-Blackburn Rovers teammate of Ferguson, has boldly claimed he’s the man to take the fight to Celtic and Rangers and end their dominance of the Scottish game if he’s given the opportunity by Dave Cormack.
But Ferguson warned Yorke that would take hundreds of millions of investment as he dismissed the 51-year-old’s ambitions as pie in the sky stuff. He told GO Radio: “No, I can't see it, unless a rich man comes in and invests hundreds of millions of pounds, which I don't think will happen.
“It happened when Rangers were down the leagues and Aberdeen finished second. But I can’t see it happening again.
“I played with Yorkie at Blackburn. An unbelievable player and was doing well in management out in Australia, but I think he’s on a different planet when he says that!”
