Barred customer threatened pub worker with baseball bat

A customer assaulted a barmaid and threatened her with a baseball bat after she ordered him to leave a pub.

Adam Chelkowski was already banned from entering the Peacock pub in Kirkdale when he caused chaos there in a series of visits over a single day.

The 42-year-old dad, who was so drunk he couldn’t remember the incident afterwards, avoided prison on Wednesday August 17 after a judge at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court handed him a second chance.

Nastassia McAdam, prosecuting, told the court Rebecca Manley was working at the bar on the evening of May when she saw Chelkowski and a friend come in. She later told police she noticed Chelkowski’s friend appeared to have injuries and Chelkowski himself was acting extremely aggressively.

They almost immediately began disrupting other customers, with Chelkowski trying to drink from other customers’ drinks. Ms Manley then realised both men were banned and she threw them out. While they did leave, Chelkowski later came back and assaulted the woman, grabbing her by the arms and pushing her.

Ms Manley threw him out again - yet he then came back a third time, this time armed with a baseball bat. He stood outside the pub on Westminster Road and began pointing the bat at Ms Manley.

Chelkowski, who has no previous convictions, was later arrested by police and, according to his lawyers, was distraught when faced with what he had done. The court heard the incident happened after months of issues with his ex partner, during which Chelkowski began drinking heavily and suffered from depression. He later told the court he had abstained from alcohol since the incident and presented letters of apology to District Judge James Clarke.

District Judge Clarke told Chelkowski, that his offending had multiple worrying features, including the fact that he returned on multiple occasions. However, he said his remorse, lack of previous convictions, efforts to address his alcohol abuse and the fact he stayed out of trouble after the incident meant he could avoid prison.

Chelkowski, of Westminster Road, was handed a six month jail term suspended for 18 months.
