Barcola to Liverpool? Alvarez to Arsenal? Ten big transfers that could still happen before deadline day

The summer transfer window closes on 1 September as clubs across Europe aim to wrap up their summer business ahead of the 2026/27 season.

There have been several notable moves throughout Europe over the summer, with Barcelona’s capture of Rodri and the transfers of Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson and Bruno Guimaraes making headlines.

But while some teams will feel their business is done this summer, most clubs – especially some in the Premier League – know they need more arrivals if they’re to compete this season.

Clubs such as Newcastle and Aston Villa will need to replace some of their outgoing stars, while Liverpool, both Manchester United, Manchester City and even champions Arsenal are all hoping to make late additions in the coming days.

So, with just over a week of the window left, here are 10 big transfers that could still happen before deadline day

Bradley Barcola to Liverpool

Liverpool’s pursuit of PSG winger Bradley Barcola has been one of the stories of the summer, and while the Reds are yet to submit a formal bid for the Frenchman, this is a potential deal that could run right until the end of the window. PSG are said to want around £145m for the 23-year-old, and while Liverpool will not go that high, there is hope at Anfield that a deal could be done at a price closer to £120m. Barcola was left out of the PSG squad for the French Super Cup last week – with manager Luis Enrique refusing to comment on his future – and the two clubs are still in negotiations, with reports suggesting that this is a deal that could be done before end of the month.

Enzo Fernandez to Man City

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was booed on his return to Stamford Bridge after a turbulent summer that ended in a sending off and a defeat in the World Cup final. The Argentine has previously suggested he’d be happy to leave the Blues, and new Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca is a big fan of his former midfielder. However, Chelsea previously set a deadline of 5pm on Friday 14 August for clubs to bid for the midfielder, and with that deadline having passed the club expect him to stay at Stamford Bridge. Xabi Alonso recently stated that Fernandez is “training really well” as he prepares for the new season, but City could yet test Chelsea’s resolve before the end of the window, especially if they were to make an offer at or near the Blues’ demands of £120m.

Kenan Yildiz to Arsenal

Arsenal’s much-publicised pursuit of Vinicius Jr might have ended in disappointment, but the Gunners are still hoping to sign a left-sided forward before the end of the summer window. That desire has seen them turn their attentions to Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz, with the Turkiye international valued at over £60m by the Italian giants. There is plenty of space for negotiations - with Gabriel Martinelli even potentially going the other way – but this is one to watch as the window enters its final days, even if the champions might decide to wait until January to upgrade the attack.

Julian Alvarez to Barcelona or Arsenal

The saga around Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez is another that has rumbled on throughout the summer, and the Argentina international has been Arsenal’s primary target throughout the window. The Gunners seemingly turned their attentions elsewhere after the Argentine made it clear that he hoped to join Barcelona, but with Atletico refusing to do business with their LaLiga rivals, the door could open up for Mikel Arteta and co. Any deal would be a club record though, with Atletico having turned down bids of £85m and £130m from Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively. The Spanish club insist Alvarez is not for sale at any price this summer, though Arsenal could yet decide to test their resolve.

Yankuba Minteh to Liverpool

While Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola has dragged on throughout the window, the Reds’ bid for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh seemed to come out of nowhere. Brighton rejected the £50m offer, and it is not yet known whether Liverpool will return with another bid for the Gambia winger, who joined the Seagulls from Newcastle for £30m two years ago. Liverpool are looking for a replacement for Mohamed Salah, and while much of their budget has been reserved for a winger such as Barcola, it seems the Reds could look elsewhere if they have no luck in negotiations with PSG.

Ayyoub Bouaddi to Man City

The loss of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders this summer means that Manchester City are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements, despite the arrival of Elliot Anderson. While Enzo Fernandez has been a notable target, the club are said to be closing in on a deal for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who is valued at around £85m by the French club. Talks have been ongoing between the clubs for a while, and the 18-year-old is expected to make the move after impressing for Morocco at this summer’s World Cup.

Omar Marmoush to Tottenham

Manchester City have agreed a deal to sell Savinho to Tottenham Hotspur for up to £85m, and it seems like Omar Marmoush will join the Brazilian in north London soon. Marmoush cost City £59m in January 2025 but he is another player who failed to hit the ground running at the Etihad. While he impressed at times, he never managed to nail down a starting spot under Pep Guardiola, and Spurs are hoping to do a deal at around £75m, making it a combined fee of close to £160m for the City duo.

Carlos Baleba to Manchester United

Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba has been a target for Manchester United since last summer, when Brighton insisted that they wanted at least 100m for the Cameroon international. The 22-year-old suffered from injuries and mixed form last season and it seems that the Seagulls might decide to cash in this summer. United recently made a £60m for the midfielder, and while Brighton want a slightly higher fee, it is thought that the two clubs should be able to agree a deal before the end of the window.

Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle

Another Manchester City midfielder who could be leaving the Etihad is Nicolas Gonzalez. The Spaniard joined from Porto for £50m in February 2025, but he has not managed to settle in Manchester and was seemingly not trusted by Guardiola. Reports suggest that Newcastle are looking to sign the Spaniard, and while he may feel he can still make an impact at the Etihad, City may choose to cash in (if they can recoup the fee they paid for him) as they continue their midfield rebuild.

Adam Wharton to Man City

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has long attracted interest from the tops clubs in England, and he was the subject of a recent enquiry from Manchester City. The 22-year-old has also reportedly been a long-term target for Liverpool, though Palace insist he will not leave the club this summer. Wharton did not make the England squad this summer but he has impressed over the last couple of seasons at Selhurst Park, and the Palace hierarchy likely know he will only continue to improve as they look to land a huge fee in the future. This is not a move that looks likely at present, though anything can happen if one of the big clubs decides to test Palace’s resolve.
