Barbie film: Release date, cast, trailer and everything you need to know

The Barbie film has released its first full-length trailer, giving fans a tantalising taste at the cultural icon’s live-action debut. The less-than two-minute clip has taken the internet by storm as it introduces fans to Barbie Land.

The trailer showcases a dazzling technicolour world of pastel pinks and brilliant blues, inhabited by countless Barbies and a host of Kens. It teases a beachside paradise filled with parties, Ken drama, and a handful of super-surprising cameos from some of the world’s biggest stars.

From Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig – from a script by Gerwig and Marriage Story writer-director Noah Baumbach – Barbie is an imaginative tale based on Mattel’s iconic doll. It marks the first live-action film based on the character.

What is Barbie about?

Plot details for Barbie remain vague, but its latest trailer suggests that Barbie will be joined by Ken as she travels to the human world. The film’s official synopsis simply reads: “To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”

Who is in the Barbie cast?

A whopping 24 brand-new character posters were released on Tuesday alongside Barbie’s trailer, showcasing the film’s huge ensemble cast. It is led by Margot Robbie as the titular doll alongside Ryan Gosling’s bleach blonde Ken and a host of Barbie and Ken variations.

Insecure star Issa Rae is President Barbie, actress and singer Alexandra Shipp is Writer Barbie, and Sex Education star Emma Mackey is Physicist Barbie. It also stars Little Women’s Ana Cruz Kayne as Judge Barbie, The Umbrella Academy’s Ritu Arya as Journalist Barbie, and Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan as Diplomat Barbie.

Popstar Dua Lipa makes her acting debut as Mermaid Barbie, alongside Ghostbusters and Saturday Night Live alumnus Kate McKinnon as Gymnast Barbie. The Ken variations include Marvel Shang-Chi star Simu Liu, Peaky Blinders’ Kingsley Ben-Adir and the next Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa.

The trailer also gave fans their first glimpse at Superbad and Scott Pilgrim star Michael Cera as Ken’s buddy Allan. Comedy legend Will Ferrell will appear as a toy company CEO, while Helen Mirren serves as the film’s narrator.

Former Ugly Betty actress America Ferrera stars in a role simply described as “a human”.
