Bar staff step in and 'seize crowbar' as man stabbed in street brawl

Staff from a bar stepped in to help a man during an incident which saw another man stabbed.

Merseyside Police were called to Allerton Road in Woolton Village at around 1am on Saturday, November 26. A man in his 20s was found in the street with stab wounds to both legs, chest and his lower abdomen.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which were not thought to be life-threatening. Three other men attended hospital with injuries.

One of the men had suffered a stab wound to the back, the second man had a head injury and the third had an arm injury. All victims have now been released from hospital.

Staff at Allerton Road bar The Loft told the ECHO that their security stepped in to ensure the incident, which they said involved two groups of men, did not get any worse. The bar's owner Engin Yilmaz, 54, said his security staff had to step in when one man ran towards their bar to look for safety.

Engin said: "One of the men who was being chased ran towards the Loft. Security staff stepped in to assist.

"We could have stopped the boy from coming in and stayed out of it - we were closed at the time. But we would not do that to anyone, we will help. Our staff felt we had to help, we don’t want anyone fighting."

Engin said that the man was being chased by another with a crowbar and was hoping to get off the street. He added: "The security stopped him and got the crowbar from him. We only did what we had to do.

"Then security led him outside. We then called the police."

Engin said he has increased security measures at his bar in the past twelve months, including more cameras and searches at the door, in order to ensure it is a safe venue.

There was significant police presence in Woolton Village on November 26 as officers cordoned part of the road and made inquiries. Though the victims have now been released from hospital, they are not willing to engage with police. Any new information will be reviewed by officers.

Regarding the incident, Detective Inspector Chris Saidi said: “I would appeal to anyone who was vicinity of the Woolton Village area at this time who saw anything suspicious to please get in touch. I want to also ask people who were in the area but may not have seen anything to please check your dashcam footage and any CCTV that could have they captured something which may be vital to the case."

Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 22000869860.
