Banksy responds to speculation as Stockwood residents spot new framed artwork

People living in a normally quiet suburb of South Bristol have been left wondering if the elusive street artist Banksy has paid them a visit - and left a work of art on the wall of some garages.

The work appeared overnight in Stockwood and has left local residents and community leaders scratching their heads and wondering if it is a new Banksy.

The work shows two monkeys sitting down - one has a paint brush and has just painted 'Your greed will kill us all'. The work of art is inside a frame with bars and a real jar of red paint sits on the bottom of the frame.

The frame, bars and painting is entirely new and appeared overnight on the side of a row of garages owned by Bristol City Council. The work doesn't appear to be signed, but does have a series of numbers in the bottom left hand corner - 415475.

One of Stockwood's local city councillors is Graham Morris. He told Bristol Live he'd asked for the council to come up and protect, just in case.

"The whole thing is new. It is on the side of a council owned block of garages.

"We have never had anything like it before but I don’t want to do nothing and find it is an original and it has been stolen by someone greedy," he said.

However, Bristol Live contacted Banksy's organisation this afternoon (May 20) to ask if it is one of his. It was fun while it lasted, but his people came back to us and confirmed that it isn't a Banksy original.

The elusive artist, who moved back to the West Country from London before the pandemic, has been producing works of art in areas of Bristol in recent years, including in Barton Hill and Totterdown, most recently.

It's not yet clear who is responsible for the new piece - contact tristan.cork@reachplc.com if you have any information.
