5 day closure of banks
The strike was expected to disrupt banking services for five days, as the two days preceding September 28 fall over the weekend. However, to minimise inconvenience to customers, the government announced that all public sector banks and regional rural banks would function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The Reserve Bank of India has also approved the operation of all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on that day.
Despite this, a three-day strike at a particularly sensitive point in the financial calendar is likely to cause considerable inconvenience to customers and businesses, while also affecting government transactions and international banking operations.
Strikes cause disruption in banking services that inconvenience the public, impact the business of the banks, and ultimately harm the interests of bank employees and there is no fruitful outcome that is achieved through strikes, the finance ministry had said on Monday.
The government has assured that it remains committed to the welfare and well-being of bank employees and to addressing their genuine concerns through constructive engagement.
Why are bank unions going on a strike?
United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which claims to represent 90 per cent of the banking workforce, is going on a strike on Septemeber 28, is primarily seeking 5-day banking among other demands.
UFBU's other demands include an update and improvement of pension, a uniform dearness allowance formula for all pensioners and an option for employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) to switch to the old pension scheme (OPS).
