Ireland’s next bank holiday is just days away, with many people looking forward to an extra day off work or school.
Last year was unique for having a ‘double’ public holiday in March as the public enjoyed both St Patrick’s Day and the following day off work.
The once-off, extra day off after St Patrick’s Day was introduced as a tribute to health workers and to remember those who died with Covid.

It is not part of the 2023 public holiday calendar though. Instead, a new permanent bank holiday was given to celebrate St Brigid and it will be held annually on the first Monday in February.
In total, there are 10 bank holidays confirmed for 2023. The vast majority of employees are entitled to paid leave for them under the Organisation of Working Time Act, while schools will also close.
The next one is on Friday, March 17 for St Patrick’s Day.
St Patrick's Day, also known as the Feast of St Patrick, is a cultural and religious celebration held on March 17, the traditional death date of St Patrick - the foremost patron saint of Ireland.
The day commemorates St Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.
Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals as well as the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.
