Banish stubborn drain smells this summer with this 10-second, all-natural expert cleaning trick

As the hot weather continues, there are a few spots around the home that need a little extra attention when it comes to keeping them clean. Drains and plug holes are top of the list.

When the temperatures rise during summer, this list of household items you should clean more regularly gets a little longer. As our homes get hotter, smells get more stubborn, and plugholes are a real hotspot for grime build-up, which emits pretty nasty odours when left uncleaned.

Although cleaning plugholes isn't a necessary daily cleaning habit, thankfully, it is a rather dreaded regular task that usually means strong chemicals and scrubbing.

However, Queen of Clean, Lynsey Crombie, has the perfect, quick, simple and chemical-free solution.

Steam cleaners are an incredibly versatile tool to have in your home, especially when they come with several attachments like this one from Kärcher.

Along with making sure your bins smell good in summer, keeping on top of smelly drains is a top priority when temperatures are consistently high.

Not only is it good for simple hygiene reasons, but it will help you stop having to get rid of tiny black flies in your home, which are attracted to damp, smelly spots.

Sharing her solution on Instagram at @lynsey_queenofclean, Lynsey shows that tackling this task can take as little as 10 seconds.

"Most of the time I reach for bicarbonate of soda, but there’s another quick way to help keep your plug holes fresh…Give them a blast of steam!" says Lynsey.

"The hot steam can help loosen grime and freshen up the inside of the pipe, making it a great little maintenance trick between deep cleans," she adds.

It's well worth investing in one of the best steam cleaners for your home; not only are they fantastic for a chemical-free clean on your plugs and drains, but they're also great for removing limescale from bathroom fixtures.

Whilst this 10-second clean is great for a quick, efficient drain refresh, if you are struggling with particularly stubborn odours, then you may have a blockage or food build-up.

This is where cleaning with baking soda can help, as it breaks down grime whilst also deodorising any lingering smells.

There's a reason experts urge homeowners to clear drains before a heatwave, but it's also key to stay on top of this cleaning as hot weather continues. Again, no one wants to have to keep getting rid of flies all summer and treating nasty smells in the kitchen or bathroom.
