Bangladesh: Hindu tea garden worker found bound, murdered

DHAKA: The bloodied body of a young Hindu tea garden worker - his hands and legs tied with ropes - was found in Kamalganj upazila in northeast Bangladesh on Wednesday, a day before polling.

Ratan Shuvo Kar was the second Hindu to be killed since Monday, amid a series of attacks on members of the minority community since the Sheikh Hasina govt's fall in 2024.

Police recovered the body of the 28-year-old from a tea garden in Moulvibazar, around 200km from Dhaka. Some locals speculated about possible links of the killing with elections, though no evidence was found in this regard, police said.

15 targeted murders of Hindus in a 45-day period

Locals spotted the body in the garden around 10am and informed authorities, police said, adding that the body bore visible injury marks, inflicted with sharp weapons, and was found in a bloodied condition.

Ratan's elder brother Laxman said the family had been searching for him since the previous night.

"In the morning, we were informed that his body was lying in the garden. We were called there and identified him. We do not know why he was killed," he said.

There have been at least 15 targeted murders of Hindus in a 45-day period, the South Asia Forum for Freedom of Religion Belief said in a statement.
