Wisconsin is holding elections, including for Madison Common Council, on Feb. 21, 2023. A number of candidates running in these elections completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Blake Alvarenga is running for Madison Common Council District 12 and the primary election is on Feb. 21. Here’s how Alvarenga responded to the question: “What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?”
“Affordable housing and affordable home ownership are the greatest issues facing District 12. We have perpetual renters who cannot afford the next rent hike and have built no wealth. The people of Madison deserve the opportunity to purchase a home to build economic resilience and create intergenerational wealth.”

John Duncan is running for Madison Common Council District 1 and the general election is on April 4. The Feb. 21 primary election for this district was canceled. Here’s how Duncan responded to the question: “What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?”
“Affordable Housing: Homelessness and a broader lack of affordable housing is a policy failure. As Alder, I will fight to ensure everyone can seek out and obtain housing without going into debt…Climate & Sustainability: Madison must continue to lead the state on innovative solutions to curbing emissions, expanding clean energy sources, preserving our natural resources, and protecting air and water quality…Transportation: We must continue to invest in a 21st-century transportation system that connects our entire city–from East to West.”
