Florida is holding elections, including for municipal and legislative offices, on Nov. 7, 2023. A number of candidates running in these elections completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Tom Keen (D) is running for Florida House of Representatives District 35, and the special Democratic primary is on Nov. 7. Here’s how Keen responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
“I’m committed to policies that promote clean energy, conservation, and sustainable practices to ensure a healthier environment for future generations. … I advocate for affordable access to education, from pre-K to college, to level the playing field and empower our youth. … I’m dedicated to ensuring everyone can receive quality medical care without financial barriers. … I’m committed to addressing critical financial issues, including fixing the property insurance crisis in Florida and making housing more affordable. … I’m a staunch advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights. … I strongly support reproductive rights and bodily autonomy for all individuals.”

Tony Vargas (nonpartisan) is running for mayor of Orlando, and the general election is on Nov. 7. Here’s how Vargas responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
“I am passionate about bringing our community together. I promise as, the next mayor of Orlando, that 100% of my focus is on a promising future. In my heart I know the only way that Orlando’s future can rise to the ultimate level in every way is that the people have to feel like they belong. A sense of home. Orlando needs a mayor who respects family, safety and prosperity for all. I’m saying to you Orlando… I’m that guy!”
