'Ballistic' missiles launched into Kiev as Russia begin second day of invasion into Ukraine

A second day of bombing has begun in Ukraine, as Russia continued their invasion of their neighbour, approaching the capital.

Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy provided an update early on Friday morning, confirming reports that shelling has continued in the early hours of this morning in Kiev.

The Ukrainian president said the strikes were aimed at both military and civilian targets.

Videos and pictures of a number of Kiev buildings on fire broke at around 4am Irish time.

Mr Zelenskyy also claimed Russian troops have been stopped from advancing in most directions.

"I am the number one target here." Mr Zelenskyy added.

Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba added that said "horrific rocket strikes" have hit Kyiv, comparing the attack to the 1941 shelling by Nazi Germany.

"Last time our capital experienced anything like this was in 1941 when it was attacked by Nazi Germany," he tweeted.

"Ukraine defeated that evil and will defeat this one. Stop Putin. Isolate Russia. Severe all ties. Kick Russia out of (everywhere)."

Several explosions were heard by reporters and civilians early on Friday morning, with buildings across the capital destroyed as a result.

A government adviser has said "today will be the hardest day" as Russia tries to take the capital.

Russia is attacking the country from all fronts, with over 200 attacks so far according to Ukranian officials.
