Fantasy role-playing video game "Baldur's Gate 3" has won Game of the Year at the Game Awards in Los Angeles – the Oscars of gaming – after three and a half hours of speeches, prizes, announcements and adverts. The awards themselves were mostly a hurried afterthought as almost five million viewers of the Game Awards' official stream were subjected to a bombardment of trailers.
Many of these teasers were, as host Geoff Keighley repeatedly informed viewers, "world premieres." Their volume certainly confirmed the event's status as the year's most important occasion for video games announcements, after the long-running expo E3, also in Los Angeles, was cancelled in March of this year – possibly never to return.
The slog of a ceremony nevertheless had its moments of brilliance, according to our Technology Editor Peter O'Brien.
