Baker Mayfield has only been with the Los Angeles Rams for a couple of weeks, but he’s enjoyed working with Sean McVay in his limited time. Ahead of Sunday’s showdown with the Denver Broncos, Mayfield spoke about how ‘detailed’ McVay is as a coach and how he does his best to put players in the best position to succeed.
“Just how detailed he is,” Mayfield said. “I mean, talking about, you know, even when a play looks good in practice, somehow fine tuning it afterwards to the ‘what if look.’ ‘What if we get this certain look, how do we want to teach the guy?’ I mean, it’s pretty special to watch how detailed he is and just getting to know him and how he wants to put guys in good positions, not to ask anybody to do something they’re not capable of and just making sure he’s putting guys in a great spot.”
When Mayfield first signed with the Rams off of waivers following his release from the Carolina Panthers, he had less than two days to prepare for the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night in Week 14. Despite not starting the contest against the Raiders, Mayfield would replace John Wolford, completing 22 of his 35 attempts for 230 yards and a touchdown.
Besides Mayfield deserving credit for delivering a game-winning drive despite his lack of practice with the Rams, it was a testament to how good McVay is at putting players in the best positions to succeed. Even though the Rams could not defeat the Green Bay Packers in Week 15, we continued to see McVay implement more plays that Mayfield has excelled with in his career.
With Mayfield set to hit free agency in the offseason, he’ll have three more weeks to prove that he deserves to remain a starting quarterback in the NFL. While it’s been a struggle for the former No. 1 overall pick in recent years, he could benefit from working with McVay to end this season.
