Baker Mayfield Defends Flag Planting In College Football Rivalries

A Leon County Sheriff's Deputy stops Florida State offensive lineman Tye Hylton (56) from engaging with Florida players after the close an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024, in Tallah

Baker Mayfield, the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, expressed his hope that the NCAA does not outlaw flag planting in college football. This sentiment comes in the wake of recent altercations that followed flag-planting incidents across the country. Mayfield, known for planting an Oklahoma flag at midfield of Ohio State's stadium in 2017, emphasized that such actions are a part of the intense rivalries in college football.

Mayfield highlighted the tradition of flag planting in the annual OU-Texas matchup and suggested that it is a common occurrence in the sport. He acknowledged that after such incidents, teams should accept the outcome and move forward.

Over the weekend, the Big Ten Conference fined Michigan and Ohio State $100,000 each for violating the conference’s sportsmanship policy. This penalty stemmed from an on-field altercation that took place at the end of the Wolverines’ victory in Columbus, Ohio. The scuffle began when Michigan players attempted to plant their flag on the OSU logo, leading to a physical confrontation between the two teams.

In another incident, a similar altercation occurred in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, after a North Carolina State player tried to plant a flag on UNC’s field following a game. Additionally, tensions flared in Tallahassee, Florida, when a Florida Gators player planted a flag on Florida State’s logo.

Amidst these incidents, there have been discussions about whether the NCAA should ban flag planting in college football. Mayfield argued against such a ban, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the tradition of rivalries in the sport. He likened it to the controversy surrounding the 'Horns down' signal in the Big 12 conference.

Mayfield concluded by advocating for allowing players to express themselves within the context of the game, stating, “Let the boys play.”

These recent events have sparked debates about sportsmanship and traditions in college football, highlighting the passion and intensity that characterize the sport.
