Bailey wants issue of Warner ban resolved

Australia's chairman of selectors George Bailey says he hopes Cricket Australia can make a decision soon that will clarify whether David Warner can appeal his lifetime leadership ban.

Warner is currently unable to hold a captaincy position in Australian cricket after copping a lifetime suspension as a result of the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

Current rules stipulate a player does not have the right to have a sanction reviewed once it has been accepted, but Cricket Australia's board has asked its head of integrity Jacqui Partridge to propose a change to its rules and the code of conduct.

The subject of Warner and leadership was a hot topic at the announcement in Brisbane on Monday of Pat Cummins as the new one-day captain of Australia.

Bailey was asked whether Cummins' appointment was fast-tracked due to recent speculation about Warner as a possible candidate.

"I welcome Cricket Australia's review into the code of conduct. I think that is excellent," Bailey said.

"What I do hope is that it happens in a really timely manner. I think the longer that drags out it just leads to speculation. I don't think that is helpful. Certainly, I don't think that is helpful for David."

Bailey said he did not expect Cummins to play every one-day international ahead of next year's World Cup in India and added there were other suitable candidates who could fill in.

He was asked if Warner was one of the players who could assume the role if his leadership ban was lifted.

"That is a hypothetical. I hope it does get reviewed," Bailey said.

"If it does I back a number of players and staff who have come out (with praise for Warner) in recent times. David's leadership within the group is fantastic.

"I think it is a credit to David that a number of people externally who are now saying it is a no-brainer he should hold a leadership position were 18 months or two years ago some of the strongest advocates for him having a life ban."

Bailey said the vice-captaincy of the one-day team would be discussed closer to the naming of the squad to take on England in November.

"I think we will potentially move away from a vice-captain and more (towards) a broader leadership group," he said.
