The Bangkok South Criminal Court granted a bail request on Thursday by student activist Parit "Penguin" Chiwarak, so he could resume his studies at Thammasat University.
Lawyer Norasate Nanongtoom said the court allowed him temporary release to study during the second semester, for three months until May 24. He is enrolled in the political science faculty at the university.
As he walked free, wearing a white T-shirt and holding a white rose, Mr Parit gave the three-fingered salute adopted as a gesture of defiance by the protest movement from the Hunger Games movies.
"Truth never dies and will continue to live on... what we told is the truth," he told reporters and well-wishers.
"The fight of the people will continue."
He was released on a bail surety of 200,000 baht.
His release is conditional. He must not leave the country without prior permission, abstain from political activities and from posting political messages on social media. He must stay at home from 6pm to 6am and wear an electronic tag on his ankle.
Mr Parit and human rights lawyer Anon Nampa face lese majeste and multiple other charges relating to political activities.
Mr Anon remains at the Bangkok prison. His lawyers are applying for his release on bail.
Mr Norasate said Mr Anon would not be released on Thursday.
"Penguin" is the third young activist this month to get temporary freedom from prison, after Panupong "Mike" Jadnok and Jatupat "Pai Dao Din" Boonpathararaksa.
