Bahrain Grand Prix: report
Much of the focus on Red Bull this weekend may have had little to do with its racing operations, but Christian Horner got a rare reprieve as Max Verstappen stormed to victory in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix in Sakhir.
The reigning champion took pole position from Charles Leclerc and never relinquished the lead, adding a bonus point for the fastest lap and winning by a staggering 22 seconds. Sergio Perez recovering from fifth to second made the victory all the sweeter for Red Bull.
By contrast it was a day to forget for Leclerc, whose frequent lock-ups pushed him to breaking point, though a late blunder by George Russell allowed him to sneak into the top four, one place behind Carlos Sainz, who might have challenged Checo for second if he'd been allowed to pass his teammate earlier.
McLaren pair Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri sandwiched Lewis Hamilton, with Aston Martin duo Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll completing the top 10.
