It was the big Hollywood battle of 2023: Barbie versus Oppenheimer.
The rivalry between the two very different movies was so significant it was even given the name ‘Barbenheimer’, and at the box office there was one clear winner: Barbie grossed over $1.4billion dollars, and was named the highest grossing film of 2023.
Meanwhile Oppenheimer was named third-highest grossing film of the year, making more than $955 million.
But as we enter awards season, with the Baftas and the Oscars just a matter of weeks away, who will come out on top?
Other big hitters in the Bafta nominations include Killers of the Flower Moon which was nominated for nine awards, Poor Things which received 11, Anatomy of a Fall which had seven nominations and Saltburn, the movie which has blown up on social media in recent weeks, received five.
On Tuesday 23rd January the Oscar nominations will be revealed, with Oppenheimer tipped to receive a few nominations for the US awards ceremony.
In this episode of The Standard podcast our Arts Correspondent Robert Dex discusses the ‘Barbenheimer’ battle, whether big marketing budgets always lead to awards, and how tactical voting could impact their chances of scooping several prizes.
Robert also explains why he thinks the big blockbusters will dominate this year’s awards season, and looks ahead to the 2024 films expected to do well at the box office.
