Bafta TV awards 2023: Stephen Merchant nominated for The Outlaws role

Bristol's Stephen Merchant has been nominated for a Bafta for his performance in The Outlaws. The funny man produced and featured in the series, which was set in our city.

The crime-comedy-drama was enjoyed by millions, with viewers binge-watching both seasons. The BBC revealed that the first series of the show had been the broadcasters "biggest comedy launch of 2021" and had been streamed 11million times on their streaming site.

Now, Hanham-born Stephen has been nominated in the male performance in a comedy programme category. He faces competition from Daniel Radcliffe for his role in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and also from Lenny Rush after he starred in Am I Being Unreasonable.

BBC series This Is Going to Hurt and The Responder lead the nominations at the Bafta television and craft awards with six each.

BBC was the clear leader ahead of the ceremony in April with a total of 81 nominations across both TV and craft categories, while Channel 4 was second with 33, Netflix has 24 and ITV 19.

This Is Going To Hurt author Adam Kay, said: “I’m thrilled for all the brilliant cast and crew and all at Sister and Terrible for their Bafta nominations for This Is Going To Hurt. I’m certain they would agree with me in saying that this show is a love letter to the NHS and the staff who work there.

“The series was set in 2006, which it turns out were the good old days – the NHS is unrecognisably tougher today. Morale and retention of staff have never been lower than it is today. And nor has real-terms pay.

“If the government don’t put their hands in their pockets and fairly reward healthcare professionals for their work, the show will soon be a historical anachronism from the days that we used to have an NHS.”
