The BAFTA 2023 nominations have been finally been announced.
Today, after months of anticipation, the longlists for all categories, as selected by voters in the round one period that closed Dec. 30, have been released.
After 220 feature films were submitted for best film, the list was narrowed down to 10 on the longlist.
The Netflix anti-war epic All Quiet On The Western Front has become an early frontrunner at this year’s Baftas after being longlisted in 15 categories.
For the BAFTA's prestigious outstanding British film prize, 57 features were submitted, including the Irish feature film, The Banshees of Inisherin , which stars Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, and Barry Keoghan.
The dark comedy has already proved to be one of the biggest movies of 2022 after it received a whopping eight Golden Globe nominations, including Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.
Set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, Pádraic (Colin Farrell) is devastated when his best friend Colm (Brendan Gleeson) suddenly puts an end to their lifelong friendship.
With help from his sister Siobhán (Kelly Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), Pádraic sets out to repair the damaged relationship by any means necessary.
However, as Colm's resolve only strengthens, he soon delivers an ultimatum that leads to shocking consequences.
Writer/director McDonagh and his producers Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin were predicted to have performed well in the categories as together, they were nominated for In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - winning for the latter in 2018.
So far, The Banshees of Inisherin is the best 'British' film to beat - even though it's based in Ireland.
The big winner at the BIFTA's this year was Aftersun - the debut feature of writer/director Charlotte Wells.
The thought-provoking and spine-tingling flick stars glittering Normal People actor Paul Mescal who plays a young father who takes his 11-year-old daughter on holiday to a Turkish beach resort.
Aftersun won seven awards at the BIFTA's, including the top prize of best British independent film, which is determined by BIFTA's full voting membership - which meant the gorgeous film always had a chance in BAFTA's outstanding British film category.
Good Luck To You, Leo Grande - which received a best British independent film Bifa nomination alongside Aftersun, which stars Paul Mescal, was also always in the running for a BAFTA nomination.
The story of a widower (Emma Thompson) seeking sexual fulfilment for the first time in her life with a sex worker (Daryl McCormack) is written by Katy Brand and directed by Sophie Hyde.
It has been winning praise since premiering at Sundance, and Lionsgate steered it to more than $1.3m (£1.1m) at the UK and Ireland box office.
Actor Brendan Fraser has made a Hollywood comeback in his role as a 600-pound man in multi award-winning movie, The Whale.
The critically-acclaimed movie has earned him several nominations thus far.
The Whale star Brendan Fraser is also nominated for a Golden Globe and Critics Choice award for his performance in the psychological drama.
In the film, Brendan stars as morbidly obese English teacher Charlie trying to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, played by Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink.
Science-fiction thriller Everything Everywhere All At Once and biopic Elvis are both longlisted in 12 categories. Top Gun: Maverick appears in eight categories, as do Babylon, Tar and Aftersun.
The BAFTA Awards will be held on Sunday, Feb. 19.
