Baffled local residents have spoken out after a giant sinkhole appeared in the middle of their road. Parts of Valley Road, Carlton, are closed upon entry as work is carried out to fix the massive hole, which is now heavily boarded up.
Those living in the street say they are glad action was taken swiftly after the incident was reported earlier this week. One man recalled driving his car over part of hole and hearing a loud "thump."
Many have expressed their shock at being face with the giant "ugly" hole, stating that it has been "inconvenient" since it appeared, and are hopeful that their usually "quiet" street can soon return to normal.
Chris Johnson, 51, who works as a postman for Royal Mail, said: "It's just inconvenient really isn't it. You've got to get on with it.

"It's been there for more than a day now. It's a big road and it's obviously difficult to navigate your way out of it.
I don't have much trouble getting to and from work luckily even with the hole in the road. Nothing like this has happened here before, it's usually nice and quiet!"
Ryan Jenkins, 56, said: "I didn't even notice it until we drove over part of it. It made a massive thump and we had no idea what had happened.
"It's obviously very dangerous but I'm just glad they managed to get people out here quickly to secure it. It looks like it's going to take quite some work to get it fixed. It's quite inconvenient getting in and out but what can you do."
Severn Trent Water has blocked the road as work continues.
Sarah Bellamy, 42, who also lives on the road, said: "It's lucky, really, when you think about. Think about what could have happened - it's huge!
"It's really scary, a lot of the people I've spoken with were just in shock. The damage it could cause would've been terrible.
"Well if you take a look at the road it's not a surprise to be honest, it's not in a great state sadly. You obviously don't expect to wake up to something like that though!
"I don't think I've actually seen one that big. They came out pretty quickly though which was good to see.
"I'm unsure of the timeframe on how long it's going to take to fix and get things back to normal, I hope it isn't too long.
"I don't drive so getting out and about won't be too difficult. It's just a bit ugly to look at."
