Meghan Markle has shared the baffled message she sent her friend after discovering Prince Harry was interested in her, describing the unexpected romance as a "plot twist".
In their new Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, the Sussexes revealed the story of them meeting on a blind date isn't really correct, with the Duke of Sussex confirming they actually came across each other on Instagram.
The first episode, titled 'The First Date', features flirty messages the pair sent each other as they arranged their first meeting.
Meghan met her prince in July 2016 after she decided to travel in Europe before filming for the next series of Suits.
In an interview on the Netflix show, her pal Lindsay Jill Roth says: "It was the summer of 2016, Meghan had planned to travel around Europe and having a ‘single girl summer’ and she was just going to be 'free’.
Meghan added that she "was really intent on being single, and just having fun girl time, adding: 'I had a career, I had my life, I had my path, and then along came H. Talk about a plot twist."
In their engagement interview, Meghan and Harry said they were set up on a blind date by a friend - but the new interviews reveal the original version of events slightly downplayed Harry's role in trying to woo Meghan.
In the show, he reveals he spotted her on a mutual friend's Instagram page and requested that they be introduced. The funny snap showed Meghan with the popular Snapchat dog ears filter.
He said: "I was scrolling through my feed and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them, it was like a Snapchat.”
Harry said: “That was the first thing. I was like ‘Who is that?'”
Meghan said the friend then sent her an email, the words of which are typed out on the screen, saying: "Between you and I thought you might want to know this being newly single and all. I put our Snapchat on Instagram and Prince Haz follows me (he’s a friend) he called me last night dying to meet you. hehehe. I might just have to set you up” (sic).
Meghan’s hilarious reply, which was also typed out on screen, was: “Who is prince haz?????”
Below her reply, viewers can see the words: "Sent from my iPhone. Please excuse all technological mishaps. I’m a Luddite.”
Opening up, the Duchess of Sussex admitted she was "petrified” about news of their relationship breaking and Harry tried to prepare her for what that may be like.
Meghan said communications secretary Jason Knauf called Harry in October 2016 to tell him the relationship was going to be revealed by a tabloid.
Speaking in the first episode, Meghan said: “I said 'Well if it’s going to come out tomorrow, let’s go and have fun tonight’.”
Harry said they dressed up and went to a Halloween party to "pull the pin on the fun grenade”.
The episode includes various pictures from the Halloween party including an image of Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie.
Harry also revealed Meghan's a "two-week rule” which he described as "very smart” and meant they had to see each other in and around every two weeks as they embarked on their relationship.
In the first episode of Harry & Meghan he said: "I said ‘How is that even possible with the stuff that I’m doing? I’m not going to be able to travel to see you that much’.”
Meghan said it was "much easier” for her to visit Harry in the UK as she could just get a commercial flight and see him "under the radar”.
Harry said in the first few months when no one knew about their relationship it made more sense for Meghan to come to him, stay in the Kensington Palace grounds and the pair could drive up to Windsor and go for walks around Frogmore.
Harry said: "Getting her through the police barrier and on to Kensington Palace was a risk in itself because people talk, right? It’s not about who you trust. It’s about who they trust.
