Badenoch vows ‘serious’ Tory candidate for Clacton if Farage probe leads to second by-election

  • Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has pledged to field a "serious candidate" in Clacton if a parliamentary standards investigation leads to a second by-election in the constituency.
  • The declaration comes as Clacton voters prepare for a by-election on August 13, triggered by Nigel Farage's decision to step down as an MP, with Farage seeking re-election among 34 candidates.
  • Major parties, including Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats, are not contesting the current by-election, dismissing it as a "stunt" by Farage.
  • Nigel Farage is under investigation by the parliamentary standards commissioner over a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency tycoon Christopher Harborne, which could trigger a recall petition and a second by-election if he is found to have broken rules and suspended for over 10 days.
  • Mrs Badenoch criticised Farage, stating he called the by-election "not to help you but to help himself" and that the people of Clacton are entitled to question the £5 million donation, while Farage maintains he has not broken the law and the probe is a "political tool".
