A second person has died in the multistate Salmonella outbreaks linked to backyard poultry, and the national case count has roughly doubled since early summer to 1,061 people across 46 states and Puerto Rico. In its August 27 revision, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added 247 illnesses, 33 hospitalizations, one death, and two new jurisdictions.
Hospitalizations now total 234, or 33 percent of the 717 people for whom that information is available. The two deaths were reported from Georgia and Washington. The agency is tracking 10 separate multistate outbreaks tied to the same kind of exposure, and almost a quarter of the people who have gotten sick are children under five years old.
