B&M has been ordered to pay up £1m after an electrician's body "blew up to four times its normal size" in an explosion at the company's headquarters.
Workman Shahenur Rahman was set on fire during the industrial accident at the firm's base and distribution centre at Estuary Commerce Park in Speke and remained in a coma for two weeks after. He was left needing skin grafts and surgery to save one of his hands after a "Catherine wheel of fire spiralled through the air", while his body "blew up to four times its normal size".
Liverpool Crown Court heard today, Wednesday, that B&M was advised by Leep Utilities in June 2018 that maintenance work was required on the high voltage switchgear at its HQ. This would have resulted in power to the building being cut, and as such the retailer hired two generators from supplier Aggreko in order to maintain the supply and "allow some core functions" to remain in operation.
