Azpilicueta, Christensen, Ziyech - Chelsea injury round-up and expected return dates

After competing in the UEFA Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup in their last three games, Chelsea finally make a return to Premier League action this weekend when they visit Burnley on Saturday.

A 2-0 victory against Lille last week was followed by 120 minutes of football against Liverpool on Sunday, before an away trip to Luton Town rounded off a hectic week for the Blues.

Thomas Tuchel ’s side will certainly be feeling the physical demands from their involvement in cup competitions, but the German will be hoping that his squad can remain in top condition for their next fixture.

However, the Blues currently have six players in the treatment room ahead of this weekend, including five defenders, meaning resources at the back could be stretched once again.

Here is all you need to know about the current state of play at Stamford Bridge and the expected return dates for those currently out injured.

With the Premier League title out of reach, should Chelsea focus on winning the Champions League and FA Cup this season? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Cesar Azpilicueta

There was the potential for Cesar Azpilicueta to return to the Chelsea squad for their FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Luton Town in midweek but the Spaniard was once again left out due to injury.

Azpilicueta has been nursing a knock that he picked up during Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool but the defender was not part of team training on Friday and Tuchel has revealed that he will miss out on the trip to Burnley on Saturday.

Speaking on Friday, Tuchel said: "Azpi was not in training yesterday so this will be a bit too close unfortunately for him."

Andreas Christensen

Centre-back Andreas Christensen has missed the last two games for Chelsea with an Achilles injury and it is unclear as to how long he will remain out for.

The Denmark international suffered the injury in the build up to Sunday’s Wembley showdown with Liverpool but it has been described as a ‘minor’ problem.

With this in mind, Christensen could be back in contention for Chelsea’s trip to Turf Moor on Saturday but will face a late fitness test to determine his availability.

Hakim Ziyech

Moroccan international Hakim Ziyech also continues to recover from the Achilles injury that forced him off the pitch during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Lille in the Champions League last week.

Ziyech lasted just 60 minutes of that Stamford Bridge tie and was subsequently ruled out of the following games against Liverpool and Luton, but after training on Friday, it is hoped that he will be fit enough to feature at Burnley.

Speaking on Friday, Tuchel: "Hakim was in training and seemed good so hopefully he can come back."

Trevoh Chalobah

Trevoh Chalobah played the full 120 minutes and scored his penalty in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool on Sunday but suffered a horrific injury during the game.

A nasty challenge from Naby Keita at Wembley left Chalobah in agony, with the defender suffering damage to his penis, which required immediate surgery in the dressing room after the match.

Chalobah was left out of the squad for the midweek trip to Luton but he could be set for a return against Burnley now that he has been all stitched up.

Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva also missed out on Wednesday's 3-2 victory over Luton in the FA Cup as he was recovering from a minor injury following the defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

It is assumed that Silva was afforded extra time to recover ahead of this weekend's trip to Burnley and he has since been back in training, so it can be expected that he will retain his place in the starting lineup on Saturday.

Speaking on Friday, Tuchel said: "Those who weren’t at Luton due to minor injuries like Trevoh and Thiago were back in training yesterday so all fine."

Ben Chilwell

Left-back Ben Chilwell remains out after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL back in December.

The England international was ruled out for the season but has begun his rehabilitation and stepped up his recovery in recent weeks, while he has also made a return to Chelsea’s training base.

But Callum Hudson-Odoi recently uploaded a video on social media which showed Chilwell kicking a ball and producing some neat footwork, which could potentially tease an earlier than expected comeback for the 25-year-old.
